Reading and Phonics
Reading
We currently use a selection of reading schemes in school to support learning and progress in reading. Our books are levelled using ‘Book Bands’ which enables us to use a selection of books from a wide variety of publishers.
Although we have a wide variety of books, the main schemes used in Key Stage 1 are Rigby Star and Collins Big Cat. We also have a selection of ‘Bug Club’ books to support reading in phonics. We have introduced ‘Lexia’ in school to promote reading and spelling skills. This gives targeted children the opportunity for specific support with their reading skills.
The reading schemes used in Key Stage 2 follow on from Key Stage 1. We predominantly use ‘Rigby Navigator’, ‘Pelican’ and ‘Collins Big Cat’ although we also use books which are not part of any specific scheme and have a range of different authors and text types to interest the children. Children have weekly guided reading sessions as well as 1:1 reading sessions. They have lots of opportunities to share class stories and novels.
Phonics
Phonics is delivered through the Letters and Sounds scheme and supplemented in Reception through the use of Jolly Phonics. Children in Key stage 1 have daily, targeted teaching sessions that focus on the phases they working within.
Generally children will work on: Phase 1-4 in Reception, Phase 4-5 in Year 1 and Phase 6 in Year 2. Children will complete the ‘Phonics Screening Test’ at the end of Year 1.
In Key Stage 2 there is a provision of intervention groups for children who are still not secure with Phases 1-6 and will focus on recognition of all grapheme / phoneme representations through investigation and developing spelling patterns. Intervention groups will also be supported through Letters and Sounds.
Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)
At East Stanley School, we believe that inclusive education means providing all pupils with appropriate education and support alongside their peers. The Curriculum is all the planned activities that the school organises in order to promote learning, personal growth and development. Further information can be found in the SEN Information Report.
